'Friends With Benefits' Review

I've been wondering why someone (like myself) who doesn't like casual dating has enjoyed both "friends with benefits" movies from this year. Then I realize it's because, predictably so, these "friends" always turn into a couple.

While neither No Strings Attached nor Friends With Benefits are particularly realistic films, Friends With Benefits definitely explored more complex emotions and backstories than No Strings Attached. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake had fantastic chemistry, as to be expected when anyone's that hot, and their romance beyond the physical was actually believable.

What makes Friends With Benefits even better is the emphasis put on New York City. Yes, I have a bit of a bias, but Jamie's (Kunis) view of the city was perfectly cliché and original at the same time.

Woody Harrelson's character, Tommy, was a great "gay best friend" to Dylan (Timberlake), and Richard Jenkins has an impressive performance as Dylan's father with alzheimer's.

There was just enough cheese to make it work without making me want to throw up at the same time and plenty of back story to keep me interested outside of the bedroom. The DVD comes out Dec. 2. It may not be worth a purchase, but it's definitely worth renting. No commitment necessary.
